"Smoove and Turrell" the Funk and Soul band from Newcastle

signed to Jalapeno records in London.

 

What a great year it’s been for the Geordie duo Smoove and Turrell, having released their first album “Antique soul” on Jalapeno Records in April 2009.


The lads have gone from strength to strength both on the UK scene and across Europe. Previous to there album being snapped up by Jalapeno they have released a limited 7” single “I can’t give you up” on German label “Club Tikka”. The single soon found itself in a bidding frenzy on Ebay with copies reaching a startling £166, surely not for a new 7” I hear you cry!
Craig Charles BBC 6 Funk & Soul Show put pen to paper to write the sleeve notes for the album “Antique Soul” and also invited the whole 7 piece band down to Manchester to perform a live session on his Radio show. It doesn’t just stop there the boys have also been called in for a live set on The Janice Long Show (BBC Radio 2) and on the legendary Clive Anderson
“Loose Ends Show” (BBC Radio 4). To top it all off the boys also won single of the week twice on Marc Radcliff’s BBC 2 Show.
Smoove and Turrell have released some outstanding singles this year, working with some of the best remix artists in the country and beyond.


• “I Can’t Give You Up” includes club remixes from A Skillz and Lack of Afro.
• “You Don’t Know” was smashed for the dance floor with remixes
from Kraak and Smaak and Featurecast.
• “Don’t Go” was a limited 7” of the 80s classic. Smoove and Turrell style…some serious funk

The last Smoove and Turrell full single “Beggarman” from their début album is just about to be released. There are some heavy, heavy remixes from the likes of Crazy P and Basement Freaks added. They have also been hard at work filming their first video to co-inside with the release, shot in their home town of Newcastle. To top it all off the video is already being played on rotation on Deluxe TV in Germany and great Radio play on
premier stations like BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 and many others. John Turrell has recently found him self collaborating with other high profile artists like Ashley Beadle, Omar, Kraak and Smaak and has also won the male lead vocalist in the “Fantasy Funk Band” on BBC 6 Music which was recorded and performed live at the legendary Maida Vale Studios for its 75th Birthday Celebrations.

The boys are currently on tour in Europe and in the UK, having just rocked Kendal Calling Festival, Glastonbury and the Big Chill Festival over the summer. Things are looking extremely good for Smoove & Turrell and it’s not even the end of the year. Watch this space!


 

They are now regularly playing gigs around the UK and just been booked for their second German tour and just been booked for a tour in Australia.

 

They played at some of the top UK festivals - Glastonbury festival and Kendal Calling and Big Chill.

Then Jazz Juice does a great job on their own track as well as a remix for Mo' Horizons with Bahama Soul Club having the remix treatment by Lack of Afro too. ChinChin Presents 12"  

 

 

To compliment the release of Bar Tunes Vol. 4, here is a fantastic limited 4 track EP 12" from the Chinchin boys over in Germany and the UK.

 

Starting with a sure floor filler "Boogalox" a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Chez les Yé-Yé" with a groovy jazzy tip, French vocals, modish organ and lots of cool Bossa funk!

Next out is Brother's Roberto and Fab Samperi under the disguise's of "Samp Brothers" with "Jazz Di Mezzaluna" (Club Shot) another Jazzy up-tempo number with cool Rhodes played by Andrea Beneventano and clean jazzy beats to match.

On the flip is 2 tracks by Bammy nominated Californian Jazz Lady "Brenda Boykin" with an excellent remix of "Hard Swing Travellin' Man" done by Northern Funk Monkey - Smoove. Taken from her new album "Chocolate & Chili" which was voted by "Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show" on the BBC in the UK in his top Albums of the Year 2008. Smoove lovingly puts his distinctive beats onto this one, crescendo-ing it into a true dance floor anthem!

Lastly is Club Des Belugas' massive club hit "Hip Hip Chin Chin" given the Brenda treatment for 2009!  Brenda's soulful voice adds to this Samba House favourite! It has just been used by contestants on USA's Top TV shows "So you think you can Dance" from FOX and ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" too!

This EP is a MUST for any DJ's bag or avid collector of cool music.

Multi-awarded Californian Jazz Lady Brenda Boykin (Bammy nomination 1997, Best Vocalist Award Monteux Jazz festival 2005) presents her 18th album “Chocolate & Chili”.

In contrast to Brenda’s former albums „Chocolate & Chili“ has not been recorded and produced in The States, but without any exception in Europe, mainly in Germany, where she has had (and still has) huge success as the singer of Club des Belugas.

Brenda Boykin presents 14 tracks, which she created and wrote with top musicians from the German and European NuJazz, Lounge & Electro scene. The composers and producers are: Gecko Turner, Club des Belugas, Moca, Jojo Effect,  Bahama Soul Club, Detlef Hoeller and Bebo Best. Also trumpet player Reiner Winterschladen (Nighthawks) supports the album as a soloist.

Even Skeewiff, Parov Stelar, Thomas Siffling and Rodrigo Sanchez have written tracks for this album, but with respect to the homogeneity of this album they have not been used. Perhaps we will find them on Brenda’s next album.

Solely the listing of these first class musicians makes it clear: this CD is above-average, there’s not a single chink. The songs bewitch the audience with their swinging mixture of Jazz, Soul, Bossa Nova and Easy Listening, with excellent instrumentation and brilliant arrangements.

Brenda Boykin is walking on the paths of Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, sometimes whispering, sometimes scatting, sometimes having the Blues, sometimes singing with maximum power. Going from the first song to the soft ending Brenda presents a spectrum of variations, that it is pure pleasure. Nevertheless the album is homogeneously, a creation all on its own.

it melts like a good chocolate with a kick of chili.The album “Chocolate & Chili” has been licensed in Europe by WARNER MUSIC for Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, also in Japan and Korea.WARNER MUSIC has ready released  the single „Across the Stars“.
